The city of Etawah is the primary center for administration in the district, the shape of the district being like a parallelogram. Falling under the jurisdiction of the Kanpur Division, the district of the Etawah has Mainpuri and Kannauj on its north and tehsil Bah, a part of the Agra district, on its west. The Etawah district, extending over an area of about 2434 square kilometers, was brought under an independent judicature on August 1, 1968.
Judicial Courts in Etawah
The judicial courts in Etawah comprise the districts and sessions court of Mainpuri, which used to include the jurisdiction of Etawah, the Etawah munsif, the Phaphund munsif and subordinate judge of District Etawah. Munsifi of Phaphund was inclusive of tehsil Auraiya and tehsil Budhuna whereas the munsifi of Etawah comprised the tehsils of Mainpuri and Etawah.
Civil Jurisdiction in Etawah
The court of the district judge of Etawah is concerned with the appeals for the civil cases. Apart from the court of the district judge eight courts of the Additional District Judges that are concerned with the civil cases in District Etawah. Five courts of Additional Civil Judges of the Senior Division and four courts of Additional Civil Judges of the Junior Division function in Etawah. The Civil Judges of the Senior Division and the Civil Judges of the Junior Division extend their judgment for the civil cases according to the extent of gravity involved.
Criminal Jurisdiction in Etawah
The Etawah District Court houses the Session Court which has the jurisdiction to pronounce the verdict related to the criminal cases in Etawah. Additional session courts functioning in the city are eight whereas the special courts here add up to three – Special Court (D.A.A.), Special Court (SC/ST) and Special Court (E.C. Act). The offices at Etawah District Court include that of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, five courts of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrates and two courts of Judicial Magistrates. The Special Judicial Magistrate’s jurisdiction at the District Court of Etawah includes the inconsequential criminal cases.
